East Fife 1-1 Dumbarton – Match Report by Oli Anderson
🏆KDM Evolution Trophy
📍MGM Timber Bayview Stadium
🗓️Saturday 6th September | Kick-off: 3:00pm
East Fife dropped their first points of the maiden KDM Evolution Trophy campaign, as Dumbarton’s 90th minute equaliser denied the Fifers their third consecutive win in the competition.
Dumbarton were awarded a penalty less than ninety seconds into the match, with the referee adjudging that Reis Peggie handled the ball in the box. Tony Wallace stepped up, although he was denied by Matty Rollo, with a diving save strong save to his left-hand side.
From there on out, East Fife looked to grow into the half, creating several decent chances in the opening half an hour. Sam Culbert came closest, as his curled effort was denied by the woodwork.
Just before half time, Nathan Austin scored his sixth goal of the Challenge Cup campaign. Culbert picked him out with an exquisite ball, which Fash directed into the back of the net with a silky back heel.
In the second half, we passed up on cracking opportunities to put the game out of sight, with Lewis Latona, Mamadou Bah, and Rob Jones all letting chances pass them by.
We would come to rue those chances, as Dumbarton equalised at the death through Scott Honeyman. Dumbarton’s attack looked to be well marshalled by the Fife backline, though a rogue deflection meant that the ball broke favourably for Honeyman, who made no mistake with his finish.
East Fife manager Dick Campbell spoke with EFTV after the game saying: “I suppose the positives are that we are creating a lot of chances and we most certainly should have won the game today. Seven points from three games is a good start, but we had a real opportunity at having all nine.”
Dumbarton boss Stevie Farrell argued that a draw was a fair result in the contest, saying that the Sons: “deserved [Dumbarton’s] goal at the end of what was a really enjoyable game.”
