East Fife brought Hamilton Academical’s perfect start to the William Hill League 1 season to an end with a hard-earned goalless draw at Bayview on Saturday afternoon.
The Accies arrived in Methil having won all three of their opening league fixtures, scoring ten goals without conceding, but Dick Campbell’s side proved more than capable of standing up to the early league leaders.
There were two new faces involved for the Fifers, with Tobi Joseph and Cammy Ballantyne making their East Fife debuts, adding further options to Campbell’s squad as the season begins to take shape.
After the disappointment of the previous weekend’s 2-1 defeat at Peterhead, East Fife produced a much more assured display, showing the organisation and defensive resilience which had already earned clean sheets against Alloa Athletic and Cove Rangers earlier in the campaign.
Hamilton unsurprisingly carried a threat and enjoyed spells of possession, but East Fife refused to allow the visitors to have things their own way. The Fifers remained disciplined without the ball, competed well across the pitch and ensured that a side which had put five past Montrose and four past Airdrieonians in their opening three matches found life considerably tougher at Bayview.
The visitors best chance came just before half time when an Accies corner made its way to Andy Ryan a couple of yards out, but he couldn’t make a clean connection, allowing Gaston to collect.
At the other end, East Fife looked to make the most of their opportunities when they arrived. It was never going to be a game packed with chances, with both sides proving difficult to break down, and the longer the afternoon remained goalless, the more it felt as though a single moment could settle matters.
East Fife’s best opportunities came in stoppage time when first Jaiden Fairley forced Accies’ keeper Dean Lyness to tip his 25-yard effort over the bar before Andy Munro headed just over from the resulting corner.
For East Fife, there was plenty to admire in the manner of the performance. Campbell’s men matched a Hamilton side which had swept aside almost everything in front of them during the opening weeks and, crucially, became the first League 1 team this season to stop the Accies from winning. Hamilton also failed to score for the first time in the league campaign.
A point moves East Fife onto five from their opening four matches, with one victory, two draws and a solitary defeat. More importantly, the performance provided an immediate response to the disappointment at Balmoor and another indication that the Fifers can compete with the division’s strongest sides.
It might not have produced the goals of the 2-0 victory over Cove a fortnight earlier, but this was another encouraging Bayview performance. Against the league leaders and the division’s most prolific attack, East Fife stood firm and deservedly took something from the afternoon.
A solid point and another clean sheet against a side many expect to be challenging at the top end of the table come May.
