East Fife suffered a disappointing 5-2 defeat against St Mirren B at Bayview, as the young Saints produced an impressive and clinical performance to progress.
The Fifers started the match brightly and were rewarded for their positive approach in the 16th minute. Tyrell Skeen-Hamilton opened the scoring after good work from Jack Healy, giving East Fife an early advantage and raising hopes of a positive evening at Bayview.
However, St Mirren B responded superbly to going behind. The visitors showed real composure and confidence, drawing level through Josh Farquhar’s penalty in the 22nd minute before Lewis Hodgkiss put them ahead just three minutes later. Their quick response demonstrated the quality and attacking threat within the young Saints side.
East Fife went into the second half determined to get back into the game and did exactly that. Cammy Ballantyne equalised in the 48th minute after being set up by Jaiden Fairley, bringing the score back to 2-2 and giving the home side fresh hope.
Unfortunately for the Fifers, St Mirren B once again showed their clinical edge. Hodgkiss scored his second of the evening in the 55th minute to restore the visitors’ lead, before Ben Stoddart added a fourth in the 77th minute. Struan Thompson then completed the scoring with a late free kick.
East Fife competed well in spells and twice put themselves in promising positions, but St Mirren B deserve significant credit for their performance. The visitors played with energy, confidence and real attacking quality, while their finishing proved the major difference on the night.
It was ultimately a frustrating result for East Fife, particularly after taking an early lead and later drawing level. However, the Fifers were beaten by a talented St Mirren B side that took their chances brilliantly and produced an impressive display at Bayview.
