Gary Naysmith’s men extended their lead at the top of the William Hill League 1 following a commanding 5-0 victory over East Fife at Ochilview Park. Stenhousemuir assistant manager Brown Ferguson hailed the game as a “really good day’s work”.
The game started very evenly, with East Fife perhaps shading the opening half an hour, containing Stenny’s attack and limiting them to next to nothing going forward. However, this was balanced by the Warriors’ equally resolute defence, as Gregor Buchanan and Nicky Jamieson proved a formidable pairing on Saturday afternoon.
The deadlock was broken after 33 minutes, with a spark of magic which completely opened up the game. Scott McGill unlocked East Fife’s backline with an inch perfect threaded pass for Ross Taylor. Taylor made no mistake with his finish, as he rolled the ball by Matthew Rollo.
From there the floodgates started to open. The Warriors doubled their advantage before the interval. The goal was almost a carbon copy of the first, although the Fifers probably should have had a free kick in the build-up. A failed defensive clearance found its way to Taylor once again, and he drove through, and converted an almost identical finish.
The second half started for Stenhousemuir as the first half finished, with a goal. Taylor nabbed the ball from Brian Easton out wide and powered towards goal. This time, instead of shooting, he opted to lay it back to Olly Whyte, whose left footed finish from the centre of the box beat a stranded East Fife defence.
East Fife had the chance to pull one back from a set piece not long after. Michael McKenna floated the ball to the edge of the box from the corner, where Tommy Goss headed it into a dangerous area. Connor McManus was there to stab home, but somehow Darren Jamieson managed to keep it out.
East Fife kept the pressure up, with Andy Munro next to test Jamieson in net. He was fed the ball from McKenna and took a shot from range, which forced the Stenhousemuir goalkeeper into another save, although he was equal to the effort.
Shortly after, the hosts added a fourth. Ollie Simpson broke away on the left-hand side of the penalty box and slung in a cross in for Dale Carrick. It was Carrick’s first touch of the afternoon, and it burst the net, as his header was well placed.
Stenhousemuir smelled blood, and kept on pressing to add another, with Simpson having an effort of his own saved by Rollo in goals. Though in stoppage time, they found their fifth goal of the afternoon, as Nicky Jamieson was given a free jump from a corner kick, and his towering header brought an end to what was an afternoon to forget for the Fifers.
After the game, East Fife manager Dick Campbell faced the cameras and gave an honest assessment of the game: “The lack of players we have means that this squad thinks that this level of performance is acceptable, which it is not, for me, or the East Fife supporters. I am very angry at the manner in which the game got away from us.”
