The Story So Far
After an encouraging Premier Sports Cup campaign, East Fife now turn their attention to the bread and butter of the William Hill League 1 season.
Dick Campbell’s side can take plenty of confidence into the league opener following a series of impressive performances against higher-league opposition. A hard-earned draw away to Inverness Caledonian Thistle, victories over Greenock Morton and Linlithgow Rose, and a spirited display against Premiership side St Johnstone have all demonstrated the progress being made at Bayview.
The challenge now is to carry that momentum into the league campaign. Every point is precious in what promises to be another fiercely competitive William Hill League 1 season, and the Fifers will be determined to make a positive start away from home.
The Opposition
Alloa Athletic once again find themselves among the favourites to challenge towards the top end of League 1. Andy Graham’s side narrowly missed out on promotion last season and have retained the core of a squad packed with quality and experience at this level.
The Wasps have developed a reputation for playing attractive football while remaining difficult to break down, particularly at home. With that advantage on the opening day, they’ll be eager to lay down an early marker in what is expected to be another tightly contested campaign.
One to Watch
Alloa Athletic – Luke Donnelly
The experienced midfielder remains one of Alloa’s most influential players. Calm in possession and capable of dictating the tempo of a game, Donnelly also possesses an eye for goal from midfield. If East Fife can limit the amount of time he enjoys on the ball, they’ll go a long way towards controlling the contest.

Opening-day fixtures are often decided by who settles quickest. Alloa will look to dominate possession through midfield, while East Fife have shown throughout the Premier Sports Cup that they’re capable of pressing aggressively and forcing mistakes. Winning the battle in the centre of the park could prove decisive.

Available: Barring Laaref, Campbell should have a full complement to choose from this afternoon. New signing from East Fife’s co-operation loan with Heart of Midlothian, Connor Dow, could also make his debut today.

Today’s match officials have been appointed by the Scottish FA and will oversee the opening League 1fixture of the season. Referee Joel Kennedy will be supported by his assistants Sean Duff & Keiran Gibson.

Prediction

Alloa’s home advantage makes them slight favourites, but East Fife head into the new season full of confidence following an impressive Premier Sports Cup campaign. If the Fifers can reproduce the organisation, work rate and attacking intent shown over the past few weeks, there’s every reason to believe that we can begin the league season with a positive result.
