The Story So Far

East Fife travel to Links Park this afternoon looking to build on a much-needed return to winning ways, following last weekend’s 2-0 victory over Queen of the South at Bayview.

After a difficult run of results which saw the Fifers slip towards the foot of the League 1 table, the victory over the Doonhamers provided a welcome boost for the Fifers. It was East Fife’s first league win since August and brought an end to a frustrating sequence of performances in which positive spells had too often gone unrewarded.

The result also represented an encouraging response to successive defeats against Alloa Athletic and Hamilton Academical, with the Fifers showing greater resilience to secure three valuable points.

However, East Fife remain ninth in the standings, and there is still plenty of work to be done if they are to climb away from the relegation places. The challenge now is to build some consistency, particularly away from home, where the Methil men have yet to record a league victory this season.

Today’s opponents have enjoyed a considerably stronger start to the campaign, with Montrose firmly established among the promotion play-off contenders. Nevertheless, East Fife will make the journey north with renewed confidence and an opportunity to secure consecutive league victories for the first time this season.

The Opposition

Montrose have made an encouraging start to the 2026/27 campaign and currently occupy third place in League 1, with 20 points from their opening thirteen fixtures.

The Gable Endies have demonstrated their ability to compete with the division’s stronger sides, although their results have not always been consistent. A heavy 5-0 home defeat against Ross County earlier in October was followed by a 1-1 draw away to East Kilbride before an impressive 3–0 victory over Peterhead at Links Park.

That victory saw Jake Sutherland and Archie Graham strike inside the opening ten minutes, with Blair Lyons adding a third late on. Montrose subsequently earned a creditable 1-1 draw away to title-chasing Hamilton Academical last weekend, extending their unbeaten run to three league matches.

Links Park has generally been a difficult destination for visiting sides this season, with Montrose winning four of their six home league fixtures. Their attacking options and ability to capitalise on home advantage make them formidable opponents.

The sides have already met once this campaign, with Montrose claiming a 2-1 victory at Bayview in September. Aidan Quinn and Graham Webster were on target for the visitors before Cameron Ross pulled one back for East Fife late on.

With Montrose seeking to consolidate their play-off position and East Fife desperate to climb the table, both sides have plenty to play for this afternoon.

One to Watch

Montrose – Blair Lyons

Blair Lyons remains an important attacking option for Montrose and is a player East Fife will need to keep a close eye on this afternoon.

The winger possesses the pace and directness to cause problems in wide areas, while his willingness to drive forward makes him a threat when Montrose break into attacking positions.

Lyons demonstrated his goalscoring ability in the Gable Endies’ recent 3-0 victory over Peterhead, adding the third goal to complete an impressive afternoon for the Angus side.

East Fife will need to remain disciplined defensively and limit his opportunities to exploit space if they are to frustrate the home side.

Head-to-Head

Recent meetings between these two sides have generally favoured Montrose, with the Gable Endies enjoying an impressive record against the Fifers.

Their most recent encounter came at Bayview on 19th September, when goals from Aidan Quinn and Graham Webster secured a 2–1 victory for Montrose, despite Cameron Ross pulling one back late on.

Montrose also claimed victories in both league meetings earlier in 2026, winning 3–2 at Bayview in January before securing a narrow 1–0 triumph at Links Park in April.

East Fife will therefore be hoping to reverse that trend and secure a positive result against familiar opposition.

Did You Know?

East Fife’s 2-0 victory over Queen of the South last weekend was their first league clean sheet since the goalless draw away to Airdrieonians on 29th August.

The Fifers will be hoping to build on that defensive improvement as they travel to Links Park this afternoon.

Prediction

Last weekend’s victory over Queen of the South will have given East Fife a welcome confidence boost, but Montrose represent a difficult test on their own patch.

If the Fifers can replicate their defensive organisation and take their opportunities in front of goal, there is every reason to believe they can return from Angus with something to show for their efforts.

Prediction: Montrose 0-1 East Fife

Mon the Fife!
