Cove Rangers 0-1 East Fife – Match Report by Oli Anderson
🏆William Hill League 1
📍Balmoral Stadium
🗓️Saturday 13th December 2025 | Kick-off: 3:00pm
East Fife recorded our first victory since the 15th of November on Saturday, when we overcame Cove Rangers at the Balmoor Stadium by one goal to nil. Gregor Nicol scored late to seal the three points in a game largely impacted by the crazy weather conditions in Aberdeen.
Nathan Austin replaced Connor McManus in the only change to the squad that lost in the Scottish Cup to Arbroath, and it proved dividends with East Fife looking much stronger with Fash as a focal point up top.
Alan Trouten had a big chance for the Fifers early doors. Fash whipped a cross in from the right-hand side, Trouten met it with his boot, though his shot was well over.
Ten minutes later, it looked like Fash would possibly find the opener. Robbie Mutch forced a save from Austin’s first shot, and before he could get the second one away, Cove’s defence regrouped and managed to hook the ball clear.
The wind was playing havoc, and after twenty-five minutes, Sam Culbert decided to use it to test Mutch from range. It was an ambitious shot, but the wind saw it start to dip goalward, though it floated past the wrong side of the crossbar, but only just.
East Fife had the better chances in the first half, although there was very little between the two sides.
The second half started well for the Fifers, and the Methil Milan had the ball in the net, just five minutes after the restart. Michael McKenna’s corner kick landed right on the head of Mutch, who flapped at it, and pushed it into his own goal. Despite no disputes from any Cove players on the pitch, the referee delayed the restart to the game, had a long conversation with his linesman, and eventually disallowed the goal. Still 0-0.
East Fife’s next chance came with just twenty minutes to go when Kieran Millar’s shot from range was spilled by Mutch for the second time in the half. This time however, the goalkeeper recovered his initial mistake and gathered the ball.
With just five minutes to go, East Fife made the crucial breakthrough, when Sam Culbert and Gregor Nicol linked up on the edge of the box. The former poked the ball through for the substitute after some lovely build up, and Nicol stabbed the ball past Mutch, less than two minutes after his arrival onto the park. Talk about an effective substitution!
From there on out, East Fife were able to deny a late Cove Rangers charge, making it two wins from two against Paul Hartley’s men so far this season. Cove had their best chance of the game on the 90-minute mark, when substitute Mylchreest took Cove’s first (and only) shot of the second half, although it cannoned into the side netting.
Credit must be given to the East Fife backline on Saturday, as even though Cove looked threatening as they progressed forward, they were expertly martialled by the Fifers. Matty Rollo had a relatively peaceful afternoon, as the Fifers stopped any chances at their source.
