East Fife 1-2 Montrose – Match Report by Oli Anderson

🏆William Hill League 1
📍Bayview Stadium
🗓️Saturday 19th September 2026 | Kick-off: 3:00pm

East Fife suffered a frustrating 2-1 defeat against Montrose at Bayview despite creating plenty of opportunities across the afternoon.

The visitors threatened first, with Gaston getting down well to his right to deny Lyons after just two minutes, before East Fife began to enjoy a good spell of pressure. McLeod’s free-kick was cleared only as far as Ballantyne on the edge of the box, whose deflected effort flew over the bar.

Nathan Austin was next to threaten, racing in behind the Montrose defence and forcing Gill into a save. The striker had another opportunity midway through the half when the ball held up in the wind and sent him through, but he was unable to make a clean connection.

Despite East Fife’s pressure, it was Montrose who broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark when Aidan Quinn got on the end of a deep free-kick to open the scoring.

The Fifers almost responded immediately after the restart when McLeod reached the by-line and sent the ball across the face of goal, but nobody could apply the finishing touch. Two minutes into the second half, Montrose doubled their advantage as Duffy’s cross hung in the wind and Graham Webster headed home at the back post.

East Fife refused to let the game drift away and continued to push forward. Gill blocked Milne’s close-range effort before Bah got in behind the defence late on, only to drag his shot wide.

The Fifers’ persistence was finally rewarded in the 86th minute when Gill spilled Healy’s cross and Cammie Ross side-footed home from close range.

Campbell’s men threw everything forward in search of an equaliser, but Montrose held on for the three points.

East Fife finished with 13 attempts, six on target, compared with Montrose’s nine attempts and four on target, leaving the Fifers to reflect on an afternoon when their opportunities went largely unrewarded.
