The long wait was finally over as East Fife kicked off their William Hill League 1 campaign with a tricky trip to the Indodrill Stadium, and while there were no goals to celebrate, there was plenty to like from Dick Campbell’s side in a hard-fought opening-day stalemate.
After an encouraging Premier Sports Cup campaign, the Fifers arrived in Clackmannanshire looking to make a positive start to life back in the league. They were met by an experienced Alloa side who, as expected, made life difficult throughout, but East Fife matched them in every department and deservedly headed back across the Forth with a point.
It was a cagey opening, with neither side prepared to over commit in the early stages. East Fife looked organised out of possession and pressed well when opportunities arose, while Alloa enjoyed spells of possession without ever carving out many clear-cut openings. The visitors looked the more threatening on the counter-attack, showing flashes of the attacking football that had served them well during the cup group stages.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Chances came at a premium, but East Fife continued to battle for every loose ball and defended resolutely whenever Alloa threatened. Dick Campbell’s side showed the resilience and work ethic supporters have quickly come to expect, with the back line standing firm and the midfield refusing to give the hosts any time to settle.
There was perhaps a feeling that one moment of quality might have settled the contest, but it never quite arrived. As the game entered the closing stages, both teams appeared content not to risk throwing away what they had earned, and the final whistle confirmed a goalless draw.
A point on the road is rarely a bad way to begin a league campaign, particularly against an established League 1 side. Clean sheets provide a platform, and East Fife already look difficult to break down. There is still room for improvement in the final third, but there were enough encouraging signs to suggest the Fifers can approach the weeks ahead with confidence. The league season is a marathon rather than a sprint, and this was a solid first step.
